for a total of 10 Lectures of 3 hours.

You are expected to have already attained a B2 level of general English.

  • The lessons will be online, via Zoom, with plenty of interaction and some collaborative work using the breakout rooms. You will receive an email with instructions on how to sign up for the google classroom. You will be asked to fill in a 'needs analysis' form, so the course can be adapted to meet individual needs.
  • "Academic English" differs from general English, and is required at University where you are expected to express yourselves clearly and efficiently, during oral or written exams, when giving presentations, asking questions, answering queries, describing key concepts, discussing options, analyzing processes, comparing methods, trends, and so on. These should be valuable to you not only during your course of studies but also in your future working life as geoengineers.
  • All four skills will be covered: speaking for everyday situations, listening for understanding lectures or conferences, writing short paragraphs related to your field, reading for scientific papers. A variety of scanned EAP material will be used, online resources such as TedED, bbcenglish.co.uk, and subject-related scientific articles and papers.
  • The course credits to be acknowledged depending on regular attendance, maximum 2 absences allowed.

Within the Geoenginering study plan the student will obtain 3 ECTS with minimum 80% attendance to the English course, included as part of the 'free choice activities' in the student study plan, having been requested to the teachers GEM board. The credits can be recognized only one time, i.e. only in case you have not previously requested them from another English course.

The course is dedicated to the GEM students enrolled to the current a.y. 2021/22. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will cover all the costs, but there is a maximum number of 18 students. In order to sign up, please contact by e-mail the GEM coordinator prof. Enrica Caporali, as soon as possible.
